Per FACQ #5 and #9 listed below a quartet can perform/compete with their chorus music in the quartet's name without any additional payments as long as it's from the Society Published Catalogs because songs in that catalog, "are not subject to any arranger fees". All members of the quartet don't have to be from the same chorus And if true then the last bit of #9 about arranger payments is talking about Unpublished Catalogs.
5. QUESTION: What is the difference between the Society?s published and unpublished catalogs?
ANSWER: The arrangements in the Society?s published catalog are ?BHS/SPEBSQSA-approved? and are thought to be the best arrangements in the catalog, though this does not necessarily mean these songs are contestable. Questions about the contest suitability of this or any other song/arrangement should be directed to the judging community and measured against current contest rules (ask before you sing). These arrangements are also not quite as expensive as the titles in our unpublished catalog and are not subject to any arranger fees. Published arrangements generally cost $1.65 (members) or $2.20 (non-members) vs. $2.65 or $3.20. Many times we have learning media available.
Unpublished titles have been licensed and approved by the music publishers, so we make them available to our membership, but the Society does not officially recommend them. These arrangements may become published in the future, which is a decision made by the Music Publications Committee. We do not have learning media available for these arrangements, although it may be available through other independent sources outside of the Society. If none exist, you can have learning tracks commissioned. Check out a listing of those who are making them here:
http://www.barbershop.org/who-is-making-learning-cds.html
Arranger fees may also apply (usually $20-$65) for orders of more than 1 preview copy, and per copy fees may vary. The Harmony Marketplace is available to answer any questions regarding pricing. You can contact the Marketplace via e-mail to Marketplace@barbershop.org or by calling 800-876-SING (7464).
9. QUESTION: My chorus has provided me an arrangement to sing with them that I?d like to use to sing with my quartet. Is that OK? Do I have to buy more copies just to sing it with a different group?
ANSWER: No way! You can sing them with any group you like, as long as your chorus has no problem with you taking the music with you and using it in this way. You do not have to purchase more copies of your music unless you are?making more copies. Each time a copy is made, payment is due to the copyright holder. When you purchase music from the Society, we deliver these payments to these copyright holders, per our license agreements with them. However, although you won?t need to purchase more copies, you?ll need to pay the stated arranger fee (contact the Harmony Marketplace), as the spirit of arranger fees is to honor the work of our arrangers and give them the compensation we all feel they deserve.

Barbershop Copyright Enforcement The BHS weekly newsletter Livewire 09/09/10
**Retraction** Due to unforeseen circumstances, an article in last week's issue of LiveWire was released without review by headquarters management, and it contained this factually erroneous text: "Chorus fined $30,000 for Downloading!! Don't Let This Happen To You!" One of our choruses has reportedly been fined for not controlling the downloads of MP3 files from their website..." We regret that this information was included in an item about the Society-endorsed chapter management suite from Groupanizer.com. Headquarters staff is unaware of any such fine being levied against a Society chapter, although one chapter was recently assessed a fee of more than $2,000 for copyrighted music that was made available to the general public via their website. Please remember that most of your chapter's performances and even most of your learning tracks contain copyrighted work. Please ensure that all music on your website is either cleared for public distribution or is kept behind a password-protected firewall--and please track all downloads... the Society does not endorse the "$30,000" figure.

Sheet Music To Print AND Perform
QUESTION;
Are the Joe Johnson arrangements 'totally free', like are the original
works public domain? Does the BHS or anyone else maintain a sync
license for them if they are performed or recorded? Most such
arrangements on the BHS website are only 'free' to print, not to perform
or record. Joe's arrangements say on the bottom of the first page "This
arrangement may be freely copied, performed, and recorded by any
quartets or choruses for non-commercial use only. For any commercial
use please contact the arranger." But I want to make sure when it says
free that it's not just referring to paying the arranger but the
copyright and any fees for like Performance, Mechanical, and Sync
Licenses as well. The arrangements that do list the composer's year of
death suggests they are public domain.
ANSWER
by Joe Johnson; The notice at the bottom of the first page means
exactly what it says. These arrangements are intended for use in church
worship services and chapter shows, and are indeed free in every
respect, including recording licenses. I have selected only songs that
are public domain for this specific reason. Regarding commercial use,
if you wish to include any of these arrangements on a CD that is
intended for sale, I would request that any percentage of the proceeds
that would be due to me as the copyright owner be donated to your
church or any worthy charity.

QUESTION;
on Joe's Contest Music page some song explicitly say they are free
while others do have fees via Joe or others with "!" It also says all
the sacred music on his Show Music page are free. Please elaborate.
ANSWER
by Joe Johnson; If they are not specifically listed as free, there is
an arranger's fee of $60. The ones without the (!) are either public
domain or my original songs and may be ordered directly from me. The
ones with the (!) are under copyright and must be ordered from the
Barbershop Harmony Society. For my free arrangements you don't need
sync, performance, and mechanical licenses because I, as the copyright
owner, grant them to you automatically by virtue of the statement in
the copyright notice. For my stock arrangements without the (!) the
licenses would be negotiated with me on an individual basis. For the
ones with the (!), the licenses have to be cleared with the publishers,
but I don't know whether the Society handles that or you would have to
do it on your own.
*Update; the Contest Music page has been removed from that website (although the link to that page is currently working but takes you to the Sacred Music page). Again all of the Sacred Music is free to print and perform and can be found a the link below...

Sheet Music To Print Only (not free to perform)
The BHS Barbershop Harmony Society website barbershop.org offers some
music (Free and Easy program) free to download and free to print, but the
sheet music including the the Heritage of Harmony Songbook are NOT
free to perform for a show or to record.
*The "Published" songs at the Harmony Market Place links under the Purchase Sheet Music require no arranger fee (owned and 'waived' by the BHS) and only cost about $2.00 for the per-copy/licensing fee, so not free to perform but very cheap (to record does require a different license and costs more though)
Joe
Liles BHS Music Publications Editor, "All of the 'old songs' (ORIGINAL
compositions made before 1923) that show BHS or SPEBSQSA as the
copyright owner/holder of the ARRANGEMENT, those songs are in Public
Domain (no copyright fees for the ORIGINAL composition), but the
ARRANGEMENT (made from the original and into the barbershop style in
1923 or after) is copyright protected in the U.S.A. This includes the
songs in the Heritage of Harmony Songbook and the 12 Barberpole Cat
songs. These ARRANGEMENTS are not PD (Public Domain). They are owned by
SPEBSQSA (BHS). Although we have put them in the Free 'n' Easy list
(free to XEROX ONLY), any recordings (or show performances) made of
them will require a mechanical or synchronization license from the
Society. Unfortunately, there are a few songs in the Heritage of
Harmony Songbook that are in Public Domain in the U.S., but are still
copyright protected in other countries, including Canada.
*BHS
Synchronization Fee Exception, "The Society will allow their
copyrighted arrangements (DVD/video/audio) to be used as promotional
materials on chapter or quartet websites, but you must ask first.

*Webmaster note: There are two Heritage of Harmony books, the Heritage of Harmony Songbook SPEBSQSA 50th Anniversary 1938-1988 edited by Burt Szabo and a Heritage of Harmony (history book) SPEBSQSA 50th Anniversary 1938-1988 edited by Val Hicks, also both were published the same year, 1988.
There's a misconception that the Heritage Of Harmony songbook songs are Public Domain but that's not correct. Most of the original compositions that the arrangements used in the Heritage Of Harmony songbook came from dated before the Public Domain end date of 1923 and so are Public Domain but the songbook isn't of the 'original' compositions but overhauled arrangements (a derivative work) of them done instead in the barbershop style and 'after' 1923. So, the arrangements in the Heritage Of Harmony songbook are copyright protected, controlled by the owner of the arrangements, the BHS, Barbershop Harmony Society, and are not Public Domain.
A lot of these songs were not originally arranged for barbershop and many not even in ttbb but just the melody and instrumental arrangements to be sung as a solo to piano or ukulele accompaniment. Most music sung for barbershop was originally just popular music of that era which was 'woodshedded', arranged by ear, by the quartet singing it. The Preservation of the Barbershop Style in Changing Times
By Ellie Veigel, "In the early years of the society, barbershop quartets did not use written music, even in competition. In fact, in one of the early competitions, the judges considered disqualifying the
champions because it was rumored they had sung an arrangement. *see below for additional information about this incident.
Although there were written
arrangements available in the early 1930s, the style was still based primarily on ear singing and improvising until the late 1940s." The first major efforts to arrange popular music of that era into 4 part a capella barbershop style instead and publish them was done by the SPEBSQSA, now known as the BHS. Tom Gentry, "The Society has published numerous folios over the years, most notably the "Songs for Men" series. This consisted of 12 collections published between 1948
and 1961. Those arrangements (and song choices) are fascinatingly, um, vintage", Then in 1988 the Heritage of Harmony Songbook.
*The "Published" songs at the Harmony Market Place links under the Purchase Sheet Music require no arranger fee (owned and 'waived' by the BHS) and only cost about $2.00 for the per-copy/licensing fee, (including the Heritage of Harmony individual songs but not sure if songbook purchase covers licensing fee) so not free to perform but very cheap (to record does require a different license and costs more though)
Here's a few classic barbershop chart examples also known as 'polecats' but in the original non-barbershop arrangements (source levysheetmusic.mse.jhu.edu, scroll down to Levy Sheet Music for more instructions)...

*Regarding the incident of having to woodshed for a contest judge backstage...
Toban Dvoretzky, AHSOW President, "I'll preface the following idea with a real piece of Barbershop history: In their championship year (1941), the Chord Busters had just been awarded their gold medals when word spread through the auditorium that the quartet had sung written arrangements. There was nearly a riot. The judges hauled the quartet backstage and obliged it to woodshed several melodies to their satisfaction. The quartet passed, because otherwise it would have had to swap its gold medals for those initially awarded to the silver medalists. This information came from Mo Rector, who heard it directly from Doc Enmeier (Chord Busters tenor)."
But here is a different account...
barbershopwiki; The Chord Busters worked up some songs and entered the state competition. In the contest they had to follow a group of policemen from Oklahoma City called the Flat Foot Four. That group would not only win this contest, but go on to win the 1940 national contest in New York. The "Busters" selected a number by Geoffrey O'Hara entitled A Little Close Harmony for one of their numbers (the intro of which is now the society's opener, The Old Songs). The arrangement and full song is non-barbershop and they were abruptly disqualified from the contest. This would be the only contest in which they would not place first. One of the keys to their early success was the input of Wade Hamilton. Wade was the staff musician of radio station KTUL and organist for the Ritz Theater. His talent included being able to arrange for male voices taking advantage of individual qualities and ranges. His arrangement of I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen was their most requested song. At the time, most quartets didn't use ANY arrangements. They just sang it, feeling for each chord, not necessarily singing it the same way twice. These custom arrangements set the Chord Busters apart early. Going to St Louis by train was an event. Everyone from Tulsa went and to say there was a party atmosphere would be an understatement. The press was also on hand. But the Chord Busters knew they had a job to do and were ready. Unlike today, there were five elimination rounds (of 10 quartets) with the top three quartets from each going on to the finals. The quartet chose their songs When Irish Eyes are Smiling and a medley of Garland of Old Fashion Roses/Dear Old Girl for the first round which they won. It was customary for the 15 quartets left for the finals to sing the same songs from their previous round. The Chord Busters repeated Irish Eyes but shocked the audience by singing a new song, when The Bees Are In The Hive/Meet Me Tonight In Dreamland medley. There was talk that the judges (who were each scoring in all the categories) might disqualify them. Also they had followed the Kansas City Barberpole Cats who did a GREAT job. The Chord Busters saw their performance while waiting in the wings and went on NOT expecting to win. They were apparently more relaxed and might have even sung better. The judges chose the Barflies for third, the Barberpole Cats for second and to the delight of the large Tulsa contingency, The Chord Busters as the new World's Champions. The train trip home was full of celebrities and singers. They were the very first quartet to win on its first attempt.

Voice
Health
Sometimes while singing my voice would suddenly get all 'froggy',
especially mornings. It would slip into these weird buzzing, creaking,
sputtering sounding voice breaks at any pitch range. 3 main factors
appear to be mild allergies, silent acid reflux, and dry air. For
general allergies to help with post
drip I use Clairton-D or Wal-itin D (with antihistamine). Sinus
headaches I use a generic 2 in 1 sinus headache and allergy medicine.
For post nasal drip and hydration I use nasal irrigation with Neti Pot
using Jala Neti Stage 2 technique. For silent reflux I cut out the
energy drinks and use an antacid like Maalox. If my voice is
buzzing then it helps while singing to frequently swallow as well as
inhaling through the nose, and sucking on gummy bears candy. see
link for full story.

Aviary Myna- Free DAW (digital audio workstation), aka free online mixing multitrack recorder but can't play one track and record another as same time (for explaination read notes below link)

Indaba Mantis- Free DAW (digital audio workstation), aka free online mixing multitrack recorder but can't play one track and record another as same time. (for explaination read notes below link). "It's unparalleled in the area of musical collaboration" focusing on it's online community jamming on each other's mixing projects.

"(Aviary) Myna can record tracks directly into projects just like a regular desktop digital audio workstation (DAW). But like most other online DAWs, it suffers from a big limitation, in that it cannot record your new parts while playing back the old ones."

"The root of the trouble is latency ? the time lag that comes from trying to process all that audio data and get it back out to your ears. From my rough calculations, Soundation?s latency was at least 10 times as severe than with a typical home recording system. What that means for you is that here, as with other online DAWs, there is no way to record new tracks in real time as Soundation plays other elements of your song in the background. The recording process is therefore to some extent blind, and better suited to the arranging of pre-recorded tracks. If you are working with already-recorded samples this is not an issue, and besides, the cost of home recording system with lower latency for multitrack recording can still add up to hundreds or even thousands of dollars (our tip: try Audacity first, if that?s what you?re after)."

Pitch Pipe for
Android smart phones- Musical Lite is a free app, a pitch pipe that looks like a pitch pipe that sounds when you can either press and hold till you let go or a quick swipe down and it'll stay on till you tap it again (also has the weird additional feature that you can blow into the phone mic like a real pitch pipe and it'll sound:) It has a metronome. It also has a keyboard if you want to plunk out some notes if working off sheet music (it also has an 8 piece drum set you tap the screen to use that I had fun with:).

FourTracks Lite a free multitrack
recorder app (DAW Digital Audio Workstation) I play a learning track on my computer, using the computer audio settings to shift the balance and remove the predominant voice (in my case lead) and hold my phone up to my computer speakers and record those 3 voices onto one of the 4 tracks, put on my headphones, and while playing it back singing the lead and recording it to a 2nd track. Then I can play back both tracks simultaneously to hear how well I blend or even isolate just my voice to pick out more issues. I can even mix and email it for coaching all from the app. I would have preferred an app that allowed me to import mp3 or wav learning tracks in their original stereo using the USB port (instead of holding the phone up to the computer speakers) and would also let me change the balance of each track (or a separate left and right track for stereo) to remove the predominant voice that way but haven't found one for droid yet. The app J4T comes close to doing this except it mixes the stereo so the predominant voice is now in both speakers (and also no balance control) and it's not free.

RingDroid is free, can record a rehearsal, store it on the SD card, it has a waveform graphic of the audio you can scroll through looking for loud audio moments (singing) or scroll ahead by the time stamps, you can then select and crop the section you want and save just that bit as separate audio file. I prefer learning tracks so I haven't tested how long it will record but I've read it'll keep recording as long as you have space on the SD card so I think it'll hold several hours. Neat little feature I just read about too is it can also record phone calls (now I got a way to save those voice mails of mine:)

deciBel is a free app, I'm still looking for a decibel app to chart out dynamics (RingDroid's waveform graphic kinda does but a more defined numeric result would more useful). The free droid app deciBel looks promising but only as a rough gage though because phone mics arn't sensitive enough.

Pandora internet radio is free, ok it's not for rehearsing but it does have barbershop music (and I recently discovered it also plays stand up comedy:)
